Paramaswaran Wins Maiden Tour Event

Bukit Unggul pro seals Impian Satellite title with 14-stroke victory

WITH a workmanlike final round 73, P Paramaswaran won his tournament on the PGM Tour when he comfortably took the third Satellite Tournament at Impian Golf & Country Club in Kajang, Selangor today.

Paramaswaran, who led by a massive seven strokes going into the third and final round, finished on one-under-par 215 for a staggering 14-stroke victory.

In second and third places, were amateur players Khairul Nizam Md Rasip (80) and Mohd Soaphee Yaacob (73), who carded totals of 229 and 231, respectively.

Kenneth Lui Da Hu i, another player from the amateur ranks, was a shot back in fourth spot, while Ricky Yeow  (A), who was second after the first round, finished on 234 in fifth place.

Nicholas Leong (A) was on 21-over 237 in sixth place, following a final round 78, while Imran Syafiq (A) shot a 76 on the last day for a 239 total and seventh spot. Rozaini Rosli had a 77 and finished tied on 240, alongside fellow amateur Azlan Meri (80).

In 10th place, on 241 was another amateur, Mohd Zain Mohd Tahir, who also shot a final round 80 and ended up on 241.

Paramaswaran did well to bounce back after a bogey-bogey start. The Bukit Unggul pro hit back with birdies at the 4th and 6th holes, and while he conceded another two bogeys at the 10th and 14th, he closed out the tournament with another birdie on the 18th hole.

Delighted with his success, Paramaswaran said: “This win qualifies me to play regularly on the Tour proper now and that is what I’m looking forward to doing.

“I enjoyed the tournament and it was a good experience. The course was in great shape despite the rains and under the conditions I am very happy with the way I played and the fact that I won.”

Khairul was pleased with his second-place finish but added that he just could not do any better than the eight-over 80 he shot today.

“I found things very difficult out there today, but I gave it my best and I’m happy with the runner-up spot. I learnt a lot this week and hopefully it will hold me in good stead in the future,” said Khairul.

The next tournament on the PGM Tour schedule is the RM200,000 PGM Maybank Johor Masters (ADT) at Johor Country Club in Johor Bharu, Johor, from April 10-13.

CHIA MAKES BIG MOVE ON THE OFFICIAL WORLD GOLF RANKINGS

Kuala Lumpur, March 12: Malaysia’s Danny Chia moved up 174 spots on the latest Official World Golf Rankings following his victory at the PGM Northport Glenmarie Masters on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) last week.

The ADT, which is the feeder circuit of the Asian Tour, entered a new and exciting era when all of its events started receiving world ranking points from this year onwards.

Chia received six points for his win in the year’s third ADT event and is currently in 496th position in the world.

Highly rated Nicholas Fung, who earned his 2013 Asian Tour card at the Qualifying School in Thailand earlier in January, settled for second place behind Chia but the result propelled him to 860th in the world, a 575-rung improvement from his previous ranking.

“The world ranking points help us as a player to see how we’ve improved,” said Chia following his wire-to-wire win at the PGM Northport Glenmarie Masters.

All winners on the ADT will receive a minimum of six world ranking points while the top-six players and ties will earn points based on a sliding scale.
The world rankings will be used to determine the 60-man field when golf makes a return to the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro in 2016. It has been estimated that the top-200 bracket will be the cut-off for players to qualify.

A total of nine ADT events will be staged in Malaysia this season, with the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM), giving Malaysian professionals every fighting chance of playing their way into the Olympics.

Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han believes the ADT is an ideal platform for players to enhance and boost their rankings in the world.

“We have a strong partnership with the PGM Tour as we share the same goals to create more playing opportunities and improving the standard of golf in the country. Danny’s achievement is testament that many Malaysians are benefiting from the ADT,” said Han.

“The world rankings is a very crucial element in a golfer’s career and the Asian Tour and ADT are proud to give our players this opportunity to take their career to new heights,” added Han.
The ADT will continue its Malaysian swing at the PGM Maybank Johor Masters from April 10 to 13. The fourth ADT leg will offer RM200,000 (approximately US$65,000) and will be staged at the Johor Country Club.

About the Asian Development Tour
The Asian Development Tour was launched in 2010 with the aim of creating a career pathway for professional golfers in Asia. Sanctioned by the Asian Tour, the Asian Development Tour will ultimately create a new playing platform for emerging stars from across Asia and around the world. Through the Asian Tour Qualifying School, players will qualify for the Asian Development Tour and enjoy the opportunity to hone their games and talent through a secondary circuit in Asia. Designed in the same structure as the Nationwide Tour in America and European Challenge Tour, the Asian Development Tour is a stepping stone to the Asian Tour and the exciting world of international golf. The Asian Development Tour has been structured to ensure the best opportunities for its members. The leading three players on the Asian Development Tour will earn coveted Asian Tour cards for the following season, ensuring a proper career pathway for aspiring professionals. The ADT will also receive Official World Golf Ranking points from 2013.
