Fung Said to Jimenez Hey you are no problem to me- Thats the way to go about well done Nicholas

fung stretched the old man to the hilt

Kuala Lumpur, March 29: Members of Team Asia hailed the contribution of Nicholas Fung of Malaysia who held his head up high at the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM which concluded in an enthralling draw with Team Europe on Saturday.

Fung, the reigning Asian Development Tour Order of Merit winner, fought tooth-and-nail with in-form European captain Miguel Angel Jimenez in the first singles and was denied a halve when the veteran Spaniard brilliantly birdied the 18th hole from about eight feet for a 1-Hole win at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.

Heading off in the first singles match, Fung battled back from being 1-down on three occasions before agonisingly missing his birdie putt on the last which would have halved the match.

“This is possibly the best week of my golfing career. It was a great tournament and I had the chance to play with the top players from Asia and Europe,” said Fung, who played against Graeme McDowell and Jamie Donaldson in the Fourball and Foursomes format.

“I need to learn to be more patient because Jimenez played without any pressure. He was so patient. I need to improve my game for the future to prove that I deserve to be in Team Asia,” added the 23-year-old.

Jimenez praised Fung, who surprised many with his gutsy display. “In my match with Fung, I made a birdie and he made a birdie on the next. It was a very nice match.  So he played very well.  At the end of the match, he's coming up to the 18th, and a chance to make another birdie but he missed it and I made my birdie so I won,” the Spaniard explained.

India’s Anirban Lahiri saluted Fung for going the distance against Jimenez and lifting the spirits of Team Asia.

“Nicholas was the first one off and when I looked at the scoreboard, it was inspiring to see that Nicholas was squared with Jimenez and the rest of my team were playing well. I think that was what brought out the best of me,” said Lahiri, who defeated Frenchman Victor Dubuisson 2&1.

The EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM is sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour. Professional Golf Malaysia (PGM) acted as the local facilitator for the event.

N the first move of its kind, the PGM Tour decided to award the title of the Kinrara Closed Championship to two players – R. Nachimuthu and S. Sivachandran – who finished tied at the top of the leaderboard and without the chance of a playoff as rain brought an abrupt end to the event at Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong today.

Nachimuthu, who came into the last round with a one-stroke lead, shot a four-under 67, and Siva fired his second 66 of the RM160,000 tournament, to finish on 12-under 272.

Nachimuthu, who won the season-ending Maybank Tour Players Championship title last December and finished runner-up on the Order of Merit, said he was happy to have buried a few putts that made the difference.

“I have been striking the ball well for a while and played well in the last few tournaments. But I haven’t been putting that good, however, today I did manage to sink a few putts and that really helped,” said the halfway stage leader.

“The course is in good condition, but we hope the rain today will not adversely affect it,” he added. “Going round today it was not too dry or not too wet.”

Day  3  THE PGM Tour’s CCM Rahman Putra Championship was today reduced to three rounds due to the hazardous haze that has engulfed most parts of Peninsular Malaysia.

There should have been wet  chilled towels for players to facilitate some breathing

Confirming the move, tournament director of the RM200,000 event that is co-sanctioned by the Asian Development Tour, Gen (R) Ron Mahendran said the air pollutant index (API) was “too high to risk the health of the players”.

“We have no choice but to forego the third round today as the API was in the region of 164 and deemed a health hazard,” he explained. “As a consequence we will have one more round tomorrow, if the circumstances allow, after which we will declare the winner.

“Failing this, we will hold a sudden-death playoff between the two top-players – Singaporean Lam Zhiqun and Pavit Tangkamolprasert of Thailand, who are the joint leaders on six-under-par 138 after yesterday’s second round.”

Should the event go ahead tomorrow as planned, it has the makings of an enthralling climax as the top 15 players on the leaderboard are separated by just four strokes, and indeed, any of the leading 20 are in with a chance of capturing the RM35,000 first prize.

The tournament also carries world rankings points for the top-six, and thus the entry of a huge foreign contingent.

Khor Kheng Hwai is Malaysia’s top-placed player, in a tie for third alongside first round leader Paul Harris of the US, Japan’s Konosuke Nakazato and Australian Daniel Bringolf a stroke off the pace on 139.

Will be an exciting event tomorrow if the weather permits.
