Suzairi Iqmah won the seventh leg of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Satellite Tour at Sabah Golf & Country Club in Kota Kinabalu

THINK BEFORE U EVEN TRY
Suzairi Iqmah won the seventh leg of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Satellite Tour at Sabah Golf & Country Club in Kota Kinabalu today and did so with an emphatic triumph.

After shooting the low round of the tournament and the only under-par score on the second day, Suzairi carded a third and final round 74 to finish on five-under 221.

That effort was good enough to secure a 12-stroke victory margin over Kevin Gaspar Pius, who closed out the event with a 78.

Casper Loh, the first round leader, signed for a 76 and finished joint third, alongside Safarrudin Abidin (77) on 236.

The opening round of the seventh leg of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Satellite Tour at Sabah Golf & Country Club in Kota Kinabalu today was dominated by amateur players who filled the top-10 slots.

With not much more to play for apart from earning a Tour Card, the pros stayed away and left the amateurs to dictate the proceedings on a course that played difficult and left the leaderboard featuring scores of over-par only.

Casper Loh shot the low round of the day to lead the event with a three-over-par 75. That effort gave him a two-stroke cushion in the three-day showdown, which forms part of the feeder circuit of the PGM Tour proper.

The winner of Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour's I&P Group Closed Championship at Kinrara Golf Club

Ben Leong

Ben Leong won the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour's I&P Group Closed Championship at Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong today by a whisker as Shaifubari Muda registered the Tour’s lowest round yet with a brilliant 10-under-par.

 Shaifubari Muda

The Sabah lad shot an impressive final round seven-under 64 of his own to finish with a 14-under 270 total and saw his effort rewarded him with victory as Shaifubari went round in 61 and would have obliterated the tournament best mark of 62, set by Nicholas Fung last year, had it not been for preferred lies enforced on the event.

There was a huge gulf between the top-two and the rest of the field as Wilson Choo (64), Danny Chia (65) and Shaaban Hussin (70) were tied for third on seven-under-par 277.

PGM I&P Group Closed Championship 2014 - Round 3

PROFESSIONAL GOLF MALAYSIA
Ben Leoong

Ben Leong and Iylia Jamil shared the third round lead in the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour's I&P Group Closed Championship at Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong today and will go into tomorrow’s final day with a one-stroke cushion.

The leaderboard remained jam-packed just as it has been from the first round with a dozen players separated by a mere five strokes at the top.

Leong, who has the distinction of winning an Asian Tour event in 2008 and is presently on his way back to full fitness following a long-term back injury, fired a 66 for a seven-under 206 total; equaled by Iylia, who went around the testing Kinrara course with a four-under 67.

There were another four players who shot under-par, which means that things could be very interesting tomorrow as the RM160,000 tournament comes to a climax.

The first day of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour’s I&P Group Closed Championship Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong was marked by a congested leaderboard where no fewer than 14 players shot under-par and were separated by just three strokes.

Such was  the opening round that 19 players were even-par for the round or better, with Lam Yu Shuen holding a slim one-stroke lead, having negotiated a course that gave a little or nothing away for a fine three-under 68.

upcoming PGM MNRB Sarawak Championship

MNRB GROUP Signs on For THIRD Year As Title Sponsor FOR PGM MNRB SARAWAK CHAMPIONSHIP

Kuala Lumpur, 19 August – MNRB Group has, for the third consecutive year, extended its support to PGM by sponsoring RM350,000 to host the PGM MNRB Sarawak Championship, which will be held from 10-13 September at Kelab Golf Sarawak.

In line with its continuous efforts to nurture the development of golf and golfing talents in the country this year’s sponsorship, marking the third consecutive year, brings their commitment towards the PGM Tour to RM785,000.
PGM Tour Chairman, YABhg Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid.delivering key note address

The PGM MNRB Sarawak Masters is the 18th leg of the PGM Tour and the ninth offering Official World Golf Ranking points to the Top-6 contenders. Tournaments offering OWGR points are highly sought after as golfers look to boost their ranking to earn entry into the Olympics in Rio in 2016.

At the cheque presentation ceremony, held at Menara PNB, Encik Mohd Din Merican, President & Group Chief Executive Officer of MNRB Holdings Berhad handed over a mock cheque to Encik Mior Abdul Rahman, General Manager of the PGM Tour. There to witness the occasion was PGM Tour Chairman, YABhg Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Chairman, Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid said PGM was grateful for MNRB’s commitment to the Tour and added that it would go a long way towards consolidating the local circuit’s standing. He added that MNRB’s continued investment in the Tour exemplifies the Group’s support and commitment in promoting golf through top-class tournaments, which also generates greater public awareness and inspires local players to pursue the sport at a professional level.

Encik Mohd Din Merican, President & Group Chief Executive Officer of MNRB Holdings Berhad handed over a mock cheque to Encik Mior Abdul Rahman, General Manager of the PGM Tour.
He also took the occasion to thank all the sponsors who have thrown their support behind the Tour as it showed that corporate companies are gaining confidence in the Tour. He gave a special mention to Vascory Group who sponsored the Templer Park leg where local amateur star Gavin Green emerged champion, saying, “without the support from PGM, the ADT and generous corporate sponsors there would not be these kind of competitive opportunities for Malaysian golfers.”

Encik Mohd Din Merican said, “We are honoured to be involved in supporting PGM to improve the standards of both professional golfers as well as the young up-and-coming players. This tournament, being part of the Asian Development Tour (ADT) circuit, would provide opportunities for local players to compete with other players from the region. We hope to see more of our local players making headway in the international competitions in the near future.”

Delighted with the continued collaboration between the PGM Tour and MNRB, Tun Ahmad Sarji had this to say, “World Ranking Points are vital for Malaysian players to progress on the world stage. Nicholas Fung is a great example of how our players can flourish under the right circumstances and with the opportunities being provided by tournaments that offer both World Ranking Points, substantial prize money and vital competitive experience against international competition.

“MNRB’s investment in the future of golf is to be admired and hopefully emulated for continued growth. PGM has been blessed to be supported by both the government and the private sector and when the 2015 schedule of events is unveiled our commitment towards the development of the sport will be seen as we will be increasing the number of qualifying legs to 12, thereby increasing the number of professional golfers in the country, as well as increasing the prize money for motivation. The number of Closed Championships will be increased as it gives local talent an opportunity to gain experience and confidence and the ADT and ASEAN PGA co-sanctioned tournaments will give our players all-important international exposure. So next year the programme will be packed.

He finished by saying, “One of the virtues of the PGM Tour is its predictability and the response has been good.”

The PGM Tour has applied for membership of the International Federation of PGA Tours and Tun Ahmad Sarji recently undertook a trip to England for the purpose of presenting a paper. The International Federation of PGA Tours has a positive impression of Malaysia, acknowledging events such as the Maybank Malaysian Open and the CIMB Classic. The outcome is being awaited.
