Chanat wins Nilai title by two strokes

Overnight leader Chanat Sakulpolphaisan shot a fourth and final round four-under-par 67 to win the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) RM200,000 Nilai Springs Championship title today.
The 25-year-old Thai finished with an 18-under 266 total to win by two strokes from Australian Jordan Sherratt at the Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club in Negri Sembilan.
Chanat was bogey-free today and that helped propel him to the top of the leaderboard and earn him a RM35,000 cheque. Playing a steady game throughout the last day, the young Thai had one birdie on the front nine and another three on the homeward stretch – from holes 10 to 14.

In a tournament co-sanctioned with the Asian Development Tour and one that carries world ranking points, Chanat said he was “very happy” to have won in Nilai.

Runner-up Sherratt was one of the four players who posted scores in the 60s in all four rounds. And although he came up short for the title, he had a good week in Nilai. His last round featured three birdies on each nine, and only the bogey at the par-4 9th hole left a stain on his card.

Sweden’s Malcolm Kokocinski shot a two-under 69 for third place on 271, another three stroke back, while New Zealander Sean Riordan’s 67 ensured he finished fourth, another stroke adrift on 272.

Akhmal Tarmizee also had a final round of 69 and he was joint fifth on nine-under 275. Japan’s Masaru Takahashi (67) and Wisut Artjanawat (71) matched the top-placed Malaysian.

With his last two rounds in the 60s, which led to a welcome top-5 finish here, Akhmal said he was looking forward to the MIDF KLGCC Championship next week, where he hopes to continue with the same sort of form. The lad who turns 26 next month, fired a 65 in the third round, before closing out with his three-under round today.
“I certainly got some confidence from how I played yesterday and today,” he said. “Hopefully I can do more of the same next week.”

“I hit the ball well and putted well too. But that is not to say I’m over confident. I know I can and must  improve and that is what I will be trying to do over the next week  as the season comes to a close.”

The next PGM Tour event is the MIDF KLGCC Championship at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club from Nov 25-28.
