All the way from South Africa Mahium Wins ProfessionalGolf MalaysiaMNRB Sarawak Title

Mathiam Keyser won his first ever Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour title when he clinched the MNRB Sarawak Championship at Kelab Golf Sarawak by one stroke today.

The South African shot a two-under 70 for an eight-under-par 280 total and a cheque worth RM35,000.

It was a welcome victory for Keyser who earlier in the week showed flashes of some good form and said he was settling in nicely while playing here in Asia.

But it was far from a smooth ride for the champion who endured a fright at the end of his round as he dropped three shots over the last four holes.

Birdies at the two opening holes gave joint overnight leader Keyser a good start and by the turn he was four-under. The 29-year-old, who lives in Dubai and works with the Butch Harmon Academy there, was five-under for the day after 13 holes and 11-under for the tournament.

However, as nerves crept in Keyser lost his way somewhat and stumbled to bogeys at the 15th, 16th and 18th holes. But he had enough in reserve to hold out for a one-shot win even after runner-up Quincy Quek birdie the 72nd hole.
“This is my first win in Malaysia, and Asia,” said Keyser. “And I’m really happy to have pulled it off here.
“I started the (last) round well and was four-under after nine. And I tried to hold it together over the back nine and just managed to do so, despite the three dropped shots at the end, which were due to some nerves that I think was normal in the circumstances.”

Singapore’s Quek fired a solid five-under 67 to climb into second place on seven-under 281. He too started with a couple of birdies and then added another two on the front nine – at the 4th and 7th holes. He birdied the 12th but gave a shot back at the par-5 15th before signing off with a birdie at the last hole.

Nirun Sae-Ueng of Thailand, the first round leader, shot a 71 for a six-under 282 total and third place, while his countryman Pannakorn Uthaipas (72) was fourth, another two strokes back on 284.

Australian Rick Kulacz carded a two-over 74 and was tied for fifth alongside Koh Deng Shan of Singapore, who had a 74, and Thailand’s Panuwat Muenlek (76). They were two-under 286 for the tournament.

The top-placed Malaysian was Khor Kheng Hwai, who signed for a 70 and 287 total. He was joint eight with Hsieh Chi-Hsien of Taiwan (69) and American Micah Lauren Shin (75).
